Working Women :: essays research papers
Work and the Family The interaction of adults and children is one to be treasured. When a person becomes a parent they change. He/she instantly becomes more mature and are forced to take on numerous responsibilities. However, every parent will agree it is the best feeling one can have. It is truly a privilege to bring a child into this world, and there is nothing more special than to begin a family. During this course I choose to help facilitate two chapters: Work and Family and To Parent or not to Parent. This is what I have learned... This course had three required texts including The New Peoplemaking by Virginia Satir, Marriages and Families by Mary Ann Lamana and Agnes Reidmann, and Annual Editions by a variety of authors. These three articles really helped me to shed light on some of the hidden topics in family life. What exactly is a family? As defined in the Lamana text it is any sexually expressive or parent-child or other kin relationship in which people live together with a commitment in an in timate interpersonal relationship. Family members see their identity as importantly attatched to the group, which has an identity of its own. Families today take on several forms: single-parent, remarried, dual career, communal, homosexual, traditional, and so forth. More and more families are struggling to make the connection of work and family fit together. There are many issues that working families face such as when if ever will the parents go back to work, child care issues, finances, stress, marital strain, division of labor, and and many more topics. As tradition has it men are the breadwinners of the family but during recent years that role seems to be changing. More and more women have white collar jobs, and are bringing home more money. Tradition leads us to believe that men bring home all the money and women stay home with the kids. However, now in the 2000's dual career marriages are more popular , and women are coming home to the "second shift", referring to t he unpaid house work waiting for parents at the end of the work day. Women spend on average 20 hours per week doing housework. Another change is that men are doing an increase the amount of housework that they are participating in. Husbands and wives are beginning to share the responsibilities, not just leave it to the husband or the wife.

Comets Essay -- Astronomy Essays Space Outer
Comets à à à à à Have you ever looked up in the sky and seen a little ball creeping by? If so, did you wonder what it was? That little ball is called a comet. Comets are small, fragile, and irregularly shaped. Most are composed of frozen gas. However, some are composed of frozen gas and non-volatile grains. They usually follow very strict paths around the sun. Comets become most visible when they cross the sun. This also applies to people who view comets with telescopes. When a comet gets near the sun it becomes very visible because the sun's radiation starts to sublime its volatile gases, which, in turn, blow away small bits of the little solid material the comet has. à à à à à Another feature of a comet is a long tail. This is caused by materials breaking off and expanding. They expand into an enormous escaping atmosphere called the coma. This becomes at least the size of our planet. With the comet going so fast, these materials are forced behind the comet, forming a long tail of dust and gas. à à à à à Comets are cold bodies. We see them only because the gases they are composed of glow in the sunlight. All comets are regular family members of the solar system family. They are bound by gravity to a strict path around the solar system. Scientists believe that all comets were formed of material, originally in the outer part of the solar system, which did not become incorporated into planets. This material is from when the planets just started forming. This makes comets an extremely interesting topic to scientists who are studying the history of the solar system. à à à à à In comparison to planets, comets are very small. They can be anywhere from 750 meters (or less) to 20 kilometers in diameter. However, lately, scientists have been finding proof that there are comets 300 kilometers in diameter or greater. à à à à à Comets are still compared to the planets, though. Planets usually follow the shape of a sphere. Most planets are fat at the equator. Comets come in all different shapes and sizes. Most evidence that science has revealed says that comets are extremely fragile. A comet is so poorly structured that it is like a loose snowball--it can be pulled apart with one's own bare hands. à à à à à Comets have very awkward rotation periods. They are very oblong. When comets reach their aphelion they are usually near Jupiter or even sometimes Ne... ... is expected to reach its closed point to the sun. At this time it will also be most visible because the sun reflects off the tail of the comet. à à à à à It will come .914 astronomical units from the sun. This is not all that close to the sun considering the fact that some comets have run into the sun and others have skimmed the surface of it. à à à à à Although the comet will be closest to the sun on April 1, it will be closest to the earth on March 23, 1997. Some people have been saying that the comet will hit earth and cause human extinction, just like the dinosaurs. The fact is, however, THE COMET WILL NOT HIT EARTH. The closest it will come is 120 million miles away from the earth. à à à à à Some people are saying that the comet is going to Be huge, and others say it will be small. We will never know though because we can not see the nucleus of a comet. The part of the comet we see is the tail. The tail of a comet can be over 10,000 kilometers long. à à à à à In all, comets, the history of comets, and comets waiting to be discovered is very interesting. I think that one day we will get to see the nucleus of a comet, and be able to watch comets form in the Oort Cloud.

How Did Black People Face the Great Depression Differently? Essay
The people of the black community experienced the Great Depression differently due to race relations between the white people and the black people. During the depression, dark-skinned people had a hard time finding rentals, let alone buying property. For example, the Clarke family recall being treated poorly when they were looking for a house. The other people would slam the door in their faces and leave it at that. On the other hand, the Jews were empathetic towards them and offered to sell their house to the Clarkes. Another reason as to how the black community experienced the Great Depression differently was the difficulty of finding a job. For instance, when Claire Clark was looking for a job, people rejected her because she was black. A man who worked at City Hall told Claire that she will not get a job in the city because the white girls will not work for her. This was a struggling situation for Claire because she tried her hardest to look for a job in order to survive the Great Depression. However, it was very hard for this young girl because of the racist remarks that the white people held for the black people. The last reason as to how the black community experienced the Great Depression differently was the unfair treatment between the two groups-white and black. For example, black children can play with others, however they could not go into their houses. This showed that the white people had boundaries set for the black people which was very notorious to the people of the black community. In conclusion, the people of the black community experienced the Great Depression differently.

How Celtic is Iron Age Britain?
The construct of sorting a period of prehistoric culture as the Iron Age was foremost introduced in the nineteenth century, and subsequently validated by the massively important finds at Hallstatt and La Tene. Subsequently, the epoch was broken down into chronological periods, against which the British Iron Age is now defined. For easiness of definition, The British Iron Age tends to be broken into three periods, Early, Middle and Late, crossing approximately 1000 old ages, from 800 BC to the second century AD, and is so named owing to the find and development of Fe taking prevalence over the usage of bronze. The term Celtic, holding passed into the slang, is now nil more than a obscure generic term. The traditional position was that Iron Age Britons were portion of a huge Celtic Commonwealth which so stretched across Europe, a universe of peoples who spoke related linguistic communications, and who shared a typical set of values, societal establishments, spiritualty, art and other facets of life and civilization. ( James 1997, 2 ) . This is now acknowledged to be a monolithic simplism, a romanticised impression Born of theories put frontward by eighteenth century bookmans, based on classical Latin and Greek beginnings. Edward Lhuyd proposed that Welsh, Scottish and Irish languages all root from the ancient Gaulish. The label Celtic was so transposed from the linguistic communications to the people themselves, landscapes, and their sensed civilization and art. Historically and archaeologically talking, this word is unhelpful and uninformative. Indeed, Simon James has suggested that naming the Iron Age Celtic is so deceptive that it is best abandoned. ( James S. 01.06.98 ) As the term Celtic is virtually nonmeaningful, for the intent of this piece we shall look into to what extent the autochthonal population of Britain were influenced by their Continental opposite numbers. It was thought that the Iron Age Britons ( consisting of diverse and frequently warring folks and were in no manner unified ) were capable to a figure of Belgic invasions during the Iron Age. Some of the grounds for this theoretical account comes from Caesar, who states that anterior to his ain expeditions of 55 and 54 B.C. , the population of the coastal parts of south-eastern Britain had themselves migrated from Belgic Gaul, foremost in hunt of loot, and later in order to settle for good. He besides reported that in his ain life-time, Diviciacus had been non merely the most powerful swayer in all Gaul, but had besides exercised sovereignty in Britain. ( D.W. Harding 1974, 201 ) There is archeological grounds which has been used to back up this theoretical account. The find of the Battersea shield in 1857, an elaborately decorated piece, is similar to a bronze shield found in the river Witham in Lincolnshire. Both are similar in design to artefacts found at La Tene. These discoveries, combined with graveyard sites in Aylesford, Welwyn and East Yorkshire, which bore close relation to Gaulish burial rites, were taken as verifying the theory of invasion as the principal, even exclusive, cause of alteration in prehistoric Britain. ( James 1997, 12 ) With the coming of Fe came a figure of bastioned defense mechanisms or hillforts. There are about 3,300 such defense mechanisms on mainland Britain. It was originally thought that these were a response to an invasion in the third century B.C. allowing loose sets of Gaelic warriors over big parts of the south state. ( Harding 1974, 54 ) However, subsequent probe has found that techniques such as lumber lacing, which was prevalent on the Continent, was besides adopted in Britain. This presents us with the fact that there were so links with the Continent, which were non needfully hostile, as their engineering is shared and assimilated. Some folks depended wholly on agribusiness where the land and dirt permitted ; others in coastal parts where the land was non so hospitable, subsisted wholly from the sea. Settlement types varied consequently, from the normally used roundhouse, to the Lake Village close Glastonbury in the Somerset degrees, to the rock built brochs of Northern Scotland. Such diverseness does non look to hold been echoed on the Continent, although there were similarities in some countries. Mentioning to a colony in Kent, Caesar wrote that the edifices were situated in close propinquity to each other, and really similar to the colonies of the Gauls. However, there remains small grounds to day of the month to propose a strong relationship between the homes on the continent, and those in Britain. The economic system chiefly relied on agribusiness and the industry of certain goods. Barry Cunliffe describes it therefore: a loosely parallel development between Britain and the Continent, the two countries retaining a close contact, which encouraged a free flow of thoughts and an exchange of goods, while autochthonal traditions remain dominant. ( Cunliffe 1991, 442 ) The usage of mintage came into pattern around 100 B.C. and straight emulated the Gallic system. There were comparings with the economic system of the Continent, but the British remained insular to some extent until the ulterior Roman invasion. We have some archeological grounds of the funerary patterns of antediluvian Britain, but merely classical mentions inform us as to the Gods, Druids and priesthoods intrinsic to these beliefs. Harmonizing to Caesar, the Gauls and the British shared several patterns, including the preparation of Druids. In the early Iron Age, the disposal of organic structures left no archeological hint. The in-between Fe age sees graveyards and burials with goods, whilst the late Iron Age sees the debut of cremations form Gaul. In add-on, many organic structures from this epoch have been retrieved from peat bogs throughout northern Europe, frequently with marks of multiple causes of decease, possibly bespeaking ritual forfeit. Evidence suggests that similar beliefs are held throughout Europe at this clip, and would look to denote a belief in some signifier of hereafter. Much is made of the Celtic caput cult, but this mostly depends on reading of the grounds. ââ¬ËThere is no uncertainty that the cap ut was considered the most of import portion of the human organic structure the accent on head-hunting demonstrates this and the emphasis on the caput in Celtic art is incontestible. Yet I believe it is a error to believe in footings of a specific head-cultââ¬â¢ ( Green 1986, 216 ) . In decision, how Belgae Gallic was Iron Age Britain? Surely, many facets of Iron Age life were influenced by the Belgic Gauls, to changing grades throughout the period. But to name the British Iron Age Celtic is a simplified generalization ; some countries were touched by Continental patterns, others, more geographically remote from the south seashore will hold felt their influences far less. However, it seems far less likely that Britain was invaded per Se. Simon James states that Britain in the Iron Age grew with critical, if non fickle, parts and influences from Continental Europe in the signifier of trade, kinship links, and reasonably surely some localized in-migration, particularly in the late Iron Age South. ( James 1997, 84 ) The revisionist theory seems at this minute far more plausible than the construct of sweeping invasion. Beloved Duncan Murdered Essay
The flow of blood stopped and History recorded a tragic death. King Duncan over the past ten years has proved to be the most trusted noble. He is a good and Godly man, friend to the poor and defender of the downtrodden, but unfortunately he is no more with the people of Scotland. On the grim evening of November 10th, the great King Duncan of Scotland was murdered in his chamber. According to the porter, King Duncan was paying a visit to the castle of his Thane, Lord Macbeth, during the time of his death. The porter further mentioned that Lord Macbeth had arranged a grand feast for the king and his sons during their visit to Macbethââ¬â¢s castle in celebration of Macbethââ¬â¢s new titles. After the feast, drunken guests resided to their correct chamber and no disturbances were recorded throughout the night until the following morning when the King was found lying dead in his bed with multiple stab wounds to the chest. The main suspects of this unexpected murder include the Kingââ¬â¢s two sons as well as his guards. The guards were found the next morning with the murder weapons, along with blood smeared all up and down their body. However, Duncanââ¬â¢s sons fled the scene and are also suspected for the murder of their father. In an interview with Lord Macbeth he stated, early in the morning, two noblemen, Macduff and Lennox were called to the castle to visit King Duncan, but when they entered their kingââ¬â¢s chamber they exclaimed ââ¬Å"o horror, horror, horror!â⬠Macbeth also stated, ââ¬Å"before the investigators could examine the scene, the chamberlains were killed as a punishment for committing this gruesome deed.â⬠Macbeth was very upset throughout the duration of the interview. He expressed his distress and great loss by showing his love and affection for the King and said he will do everything in his power to find the killer and punish him. An interview with two Scottish nobleman was also held follow the murder of King Duncan. During his interview, Lennox commented on what a terribleà night it had been. He said the wind had blown chimneys down and described how it howled so terribly, but unfortunately refrained from further questioning about the murder to uphold the familyââ¬â¢s wishes for privacy. Macduff however agreed to answer more questions. Macduff stated during his interview, ââ¬Å"It is speculated that the kingââ¬â¢s sons had bribed the guards to kill Duncan because the crown passes to the nearest eligible kin.â⬠After hearing the news of their fatherââ¬â¢s murder, King Duncanââ¬â¢s sonââ¬â¢s, Malcolm and Donalbain, fearing their lives, fled Scotland. It appears to the people of Scotland that the sonââ¬â¢s hasty departure makes them prime suspects of the crime. King Duncanââ¬â¢s body was removed from Macbethââ¬â¢s chamber in order for burial preparations. The Kingââ¬â¢s remains will be buried in the kingââ¬â¢s burial grounds in Scotland. Once news of the murder was released to the public, the people of Scotland began mourning for their beloved king and immediately began focusing all efforts on uncovering who committed this foul deed. Unfortunately, this tragic murder remains unsolved. Investigations will continue until this mystery is solved. Townspeople are encouraged to come forward with any and all information that may lead to solving of this crime.

The Hunger Games and Child Soldiers: the Sad Truth
Hunger Games and Child Soldiers: The Sad Truth The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins,(Collins) and Child Soldiers are intertwined together because they are both children fighting for their lives. The children are alike because they got executed into being prisoners, that fight to their deaths and kill savagely. The children live similarly because they both have organizations or sponsors helping them get out of their situation. Lastly, the children experience the same emotions because The Hunger Games(Collins) is kind of like a realistic version of child soldiers. The Hunger Games (Collins) and child soldiers think alike because children from both scenarios are fighting for their lives through brutality, hunger, and savageness. The Hunger Games(Collins) and Child Soldiers are intertwined together because they are both children fighting for their lives. Lastly, the children are alike because The Hunger Games(Collins) is kind of like a realistic version of child soldiers. The Hunger Games (Collins) and child soldiers are alike because children from both scenarios are fighting for their lives through brutality, hunger, and savageness. Child Soldiers, like The Hunger Games(Collins), are very alike because they are both young children forced to fight and kill savagely. According to War Child, a reliable organization aimed at saving child soldiers, Child soldiers are kids that are under the age of 18 who are used to fight and kill in wars and for power. (warchild) Children as young as 12 years old fight and kill each other like itââ¬â¢s a friendly game. These children should be learning how to associate with other kids and play at the playgrounds with friends. Instead of normal childhood memories, demonic people such as Joseph Kony corrupt their minds into be lieving it's tolerable to kill. (Kony 2012, Invisible children inc. ) This flabbergasting organization Invisible Children Inc. , made Joseph Kony famous so he would get caught. According to the child soldiers global report, there is over 300,000 children in almost every country where there is warfare or conflict happening that still use child soldiers to combat. facts and figures on child soldiers) In The Hunger Games there is 24 tributes every year. (The Hunger Games, Collins). If all the tributes are added up over the years, all the myriad deaths in both The Hunger Games and child soldiers is a drastic tragedy. (collins) Child Soldiers and The Hunger Games are poor children forced to fight fiercely. If the children refuse to fight, they will be killed instantaneously. (The Hunger Games, Kony 2012) These children will do anything to survive even if it means to eradicate their peers who are in the same situation as them, or secretly be in love with someone.Katniss and Peeta, from Th e Hunger Games, are secretly in love for the cameras to get sponsors, only for survival. (Collins) In The Hunger Games, if the tributes have information about something, the capitol will kidnap them, and turn them into beasts, which then the capital tortures them to death instead of letting them live a profligate death. (Collins) For example, Peeta is kidnapped from the Capitol and is turned into a beast and tries to kill Katniss against his will, a disastrous trick from the Capitol. Collins) Child soldiers and The Hunger Games relate because both the leaders of the child soldiers, and the Capitol, from The Hunger Games, will kill the children if they violate their rules. (Invisible children Inc. , Collins) The Hunger Games and child soldiers are alike because they both have organizations or sponsors who are exasperating to save the adolescents' lives and contribute them stipulations for survival. (Invisible Children Inc. , Collins) In the Hunger Games Katniss has various sponsors se nding her food, medicine, and weapons to help her outlast, and make it out of the games. Collins) The sponsors who send items for the tributes survival, costs a great deal of money to give to the tributes, even if itââ¬â¢s just a crumb of bread. (The Hunger Games, Collins) Organizations trying to help children get out of being child soldiers are like the sponsors facilitating tributes. Both sponsors and tributes traverse over trying to scoop up money to buy equipment to donate. Some famous organizations, aimed at helping child soldiers get out of being a soldier, are The Invisible Children Inc. , and War child. War Child and Invisible People) Child soldiers, with the help of organizations, can get out of warfare and have education, plus return home safely. (War Child, Invisible Children Inc. ) In The Hunger Games it costs a lot to send to send the tributes gifts from their sponsors. (Collins)The reason this has to do with child soldiers is because the organizations that help child ren don't have much funds. Ann O Neil, from CNN, thinks the organizations do not have much funds to help child soldiers so they are not as effective as the organizations could be. Ann O'Neill,Cnn, Kids turned into Terrifying Killers) Collins probably got the idea of having sponsors from the child soldiers organizations. Some children who have been through the cruelty and savageness they go through, end up never getting their innocence back. In The Hunger Games, the living tributes have visions of killing each other, which end up haunting them through gruelling, unmistaken mayhem known as a nightmare, which Katniss needs Peeta to help her get through. (Collins)ââ¬Å"I have lost all my dreams, all my hopes for the future, I feel like a dead personâ⬠, a former child soldier from the LRA says. War Child) Many tributes from The Hunger Games and child soldiers are troubled for the rest of their life after killing people. (Collins, Kony 2012 video) Child Soldiers is like a realistic version of The Hunger Games. In the novel, Katniss is poor with the rest of the districts compared to the capitol. (Collins) It is like Africa or other places where child soldiers exist with savagery. The children are barely fed and child soldiers sometimes even have to be savage and eat parts of dead children. Facts and Figures on Child Soldiers) There is not words to explain how inhumane both The Hunger Games and the thought of child soldiers are. The idiosyncrasy of the leaders is unbelievable when it results to having children fight. The reason child soldiers are taken more easily is because families live in bad areas from poverty and they get kidnapped. (Kony 2012 Video) The children are easier to prey on if they are in poverty. In one article on CNN, a child soldier said he couldn't wait to be old enough to get out of being a child soldier so he could be a hitman for drug cartels to put food on the table. Stolen Kids Turned into Terrifying Killers, CNN) This is like The Hunger Games lifers who train their whole lives to be in the games for fame. Lastly, both The Hunger Games(Collins) and child soldiers will do cruel things, because they are so troubled from the society they live in. Lastly, child soldiers and The Hunger Games both hope to get out of their situation. Child soldiers and tributes from The Hunger Games(Collins) don't fight back to their leaders, because there is hope to stop fighting or get out of the arena in The Hunger Games. Collins) Children fighting for their lives who are savagely forced to fight is the realistic version of The Hunger Games. Children fight for their lives through hardships like having the pressure of taking care of their family through getting paid of being a child soldier, or in Katnissââ¬â¢s case, making sure she will make it back out of The Hunger Games to be the provider for her family again. (Collins&War Child) Child soldiers and the tributes from The Hunger Games suffer many things, but in the end it comes dow n to the question of do all humans have savage secretly bestowed in them? The Hunger Games(Collins) and Child Soldiers are intertwined together because they are both children fighting for their lives. The children are alike because they are both prisoners that are forced to fight and kill savagely. The children are similar because they both have organizations or sponsors helping them get out of their situation. Lastly, the children are alike because The Hunger Games(Collins) is kind of like a realistic version of child soldiers.
